90-Day Goal: Day 24: Clue Into the Cue
Habits are fuel for your goals.
Habits propel our behaviors and activities without requiring conscious effort. They can be incredibly helpful when our habits help us work productively and reach our goals. Habits can also be destructive when they distract us or harm us, even when that harm is unintentional.
Understanding how habits are made (and broken) gives us the power to put habits to work for us. Charles Duhigg, in his book Power of Habit, explains that every habit starts with a psychological pattern called a “habit loop,” which is a three-part process. First, there’s a cue, or trigger, that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and let a behavior unfold.
Tip 24: Clue Into the Cue.
A cue is a stimulus that causes actions. Examples include seeing a packet of cigarettes or a chocolate bar. Another example is hearing the music from an ice cream truck as it makes its way around the neighborhood.
Essentially a cue is a trigger. The cue is the building blocks of building a new habit because the cue, whether we are aware of it or not, is what kicks the Habit Loop into motion.
As you crush your 90-Day Goal, take inventory of your habit cues. What triggers are in your life today? How do you respond to them? Are those responses helping you to be successful pursuing your goal?
It may take a few days and it will definitely take intentionality, but understanding your cues is the first step in harnessing the power of habits. James Clear has a super helpful article to help you mine out cues.
Your 90-Day Goal requires a cue. Clue into the cue and enjoy the results.
