90-Day Goal: Day 25: Routines Rule
Your 90-Day Goal requires consistent focus and attention to tasks.
Habits we build help us by removing the need for us to make decisions, which requires both energy and effort. The reason is because habits function in our subconscious mind, operating on autopilot so we can reserve our energy for the things that need immediate attention.
The Habit Loop described by Charles Duhigg describes the 3 parts of a habit: cue, routine, and reward. Now that you understand your cues and how they affect you, it is time to examine the routines that you currently have and ones you need to build in order to crush your 90-Day goal.
Routines are actions or behaviours and can be physical, mental or emotional. Routines can be incredibly complex or radically simple. Routines are simply what happens when triggered or cued.
Tip 25: Routines Rule.
If a cue is receiving a notification from Instagram, then the routine or behavior is to check Instagram. Another example of a routine is turning off the lights after the cue of leaving a room. Routines just happen, which is why they are so powerful.
If the activity or behavior is one that helps you crush your 90-Day Goal, then you are on your way to success. If the activity or behavior is one that distracts you from your 90-Day Goal, then it is valuable to understand so you can change it.
Appreciate the power of your routines because they rule your day. Now that you have more perspective on your cues, you can understand how your behaviors either help you reach your goal or bleed energy through sideways tasks and activities.
Consider the behaviors and tasks that are required to crush your 90-Day Goal. Are you currently set up for success? If not, then take a look at your routines and decide what needs to change.
