90-Day Goal: Day 34: A Well-Placed No

When I was a kid, whenever the teacher began a sentence that might invite students to participate my hand would shoot in the air. Maybe you are like me—love to play, be included, and be a part of the action.

Work In Your Sweet Spot

While there is a lot of good that can come from jumping at every opportunity, there is also the potential to say yes to activities that are outside our sweet spot. When we work outside the talents we have and the passion that fuels us, we can get around but it keeps us from doing what we do best.

The power of a strategic no cannot be overstated. In order for you to crush your 90-Day Goal, you will have to say no to activities and opportunities that might be fun and more enjoyable than your 90-Day Goal if you are going to reach the finish line.

While I would rather binge watch Netflix, I will be rewarded by the satisfaction of completing my goal if I say no to Netflix and yes to focus.

Tip 34: The Power of a Well-Placed No

Your life is full of experience that you can use to know where to exercise a well-placed no. You will increase the value in  your life when your energy is poured out in the right places.

Look back at your time at work and remember when you stepped forward to help with a project and it was not a win. What happened? Can you name the misalignment to your special talents and interests?

Maybe you even did a good job but it wore you out and caused you stress. Going forward, learn from this experience and don’t rush to join that type of work.

Remember When You Were Successful … and When the Team Valued It

Instead, consider the times when you both had a great time and the team appreciated your contribution. What was that experience like? Can  you create more opportunities where you can bring your best to the work at hand? Make sure that you use a well-placed no in your life so that you create margin to say yes to these life-giving  opportunities.

You only have so much time and energy. Use a well-placed no to make sure these precious resources are not wasted and bring the value to show.  Create space in your life to say yes to the thing that your experience has proven to be a great fit and a place of grace. As you crush your 90-Day Goal, use the power of no to get the ultimate yes.

Please send me your questions, challenges, and suggestions as we continue in the 90-Day Goal Together. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing the journey with you.
