Let’s get on the path. The path is the third and final element of the framework by Chip Heath and Dan Heathfrom their book, Switch

The path is all about the road you are trodding, the way before you, the environment you are in. The path helps us understand our situation and the context in which we are pursuing our 90-Day Goal.

One of my life dreams is to have a single digit handicap in golf. I love to play golf and live in Atlanta, Georgia where we can play most of the year. Usually a piece of my Younique LifePlan includes something about golf.

Most of the time I name a renewal rhythm of at least one trip to the range and 9 holes of play each week. If I set a 90-Day Goal related to playing a set number of rounds in winter, then I am not on the right path. Winter is wet and cold, and I am a fair weather golfer. I did not clear the path, in fact I set myself up to fail even though that goal has clear direction and I am emotionally motivated to for it.

Tip 53: Clear the Path.

Design your environment so you can be successful. If you have a goal around eating a diet that is healthier for you, then make sure you path is set up for great choices. If you are eliminating junk foods, then clear them out of your pantry!

Throw the chips and M&M’s away, or at least put them on a really high shelf so you can’t get to them easily. In addition, make it easier to choose good foods when you shop. Plan your healthy meals and make a grocery list before you head to the store.

I know some people who sleep in their workout clothes (clean ones!) so when they roll out of bed in the morning they have absolutely no excuse not to hit the gym. This is a great example of clearing the path of obstacles, distractions and excuses.

Another tip is to surround yourself with people who are also pursuing the behavior change that you are going for in you 90-Day Goal. For the healthy eating example, ask your family or friends to join you. Avoid going out to dinner with people who order foods that will pull you off course.

At work, ask to work with a team or mentor who is already practicing the skill or behavior you are developing in your 90-Day Goal. Putting the right people around us is a powerful way to clear the path and crush your 90-Day Goal.

Please send me your questions, challenges, and suggestions as we continue in the 90-Day Goal Together. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing the journey with you.
