Today we are going to talk about what is working on how it can help us be successful. When we set a goal or want to change our behaviors, often we start with what we don’t like and want to change in our lives. Focusing on the bad stuff is natural because it is often causing us pain or discomfort and therefore stands out.
What if you looked for the bright spots in your life? Change management experts call this the “positive deviant” and the Heath brothers call it “bright spots” in their book Switch. Bright spots are the things in your life that are working and places where you are succeeding. Not everything in your life is broken!
Tip 54: Follow the Bright Spots.
Take a minute and think about times in which you were really successful doing something hard. Think about right now and where you are winning in your life already, before you started this 90-Day Goal.
When you think about these bright spots, what do they have in common? What do you notice around them that could be a key ingredient to your success? Are you at your best in the morning, when doing something together with a friend or family member, is it a season in your life when you could be radically focused?
Look for clues and then discover ways to design your life to get fuel from those bright spots.
Another bright spots tip is to follow what is proven to work. Be sure that the type of behavior you are managing or changing in your life has some demonstrated success to it.
Instead of “I’ll try this” randomly, do some research. Interview other people who have been successful managing that change. Bright spots can be informed by people who have gone before and can help you with their experience.
Bright spots lift up success and use it to fuel the future. Benefiting from our own experience and the proven experience of others are great ways to ensure your 90-Day Goal will hit the mark.
Please send me your questions, challenges, and suggestions as we continue in the 90-Day Goal Together. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing the journey with you.
