90-Day Goal: Day 55: Make Emergency Procedures

What happens when we get tired?

Fatigue and exhaustion are real and our bodies feel it. What can also happen is that our minds, our wills, or brains gets tired of setting clear direction for us in pursuit of our 90-Day Goal.

In the language of Switch, the Rider gets tired. The rational part of ourselves gets tired and stop working hard at setting clear direction.

You have heard of “decision fatigue.” Decision fatigue refers to the fact that making decisions costs us energy and there is a tipping point to where we get tired and our decisions are negatively impacted. Our decisions are not as thoughtful; we are not taking in the best information to inform decisions.

How can we stay on course and set clear direction when fatigue sets in?

The answer is to make a plan in advance. My dad was an Air Force pilot and tells great stories about his experiences in the air. He also trained us kids in the practice of making “emergency procedures” in life.

When you are flying a jet and something bad happens you rely on pre-built and trained emergency procedures. You don’t have the time, or energy, to figure out what to do in the moment. Your best chance at survival is to default to previously designed emergency procedures.

Tip 55: Make Emergency Procedures.

This is great life advice that has greatly helped me over the years. When something comes to take you off course then refer to the plan you have made for how you will get through it or overcome it. Use your emergency procedures when the clear direction set by the rider is threatened by decision fatigue.

I love my Peloton and most mornings I pick a workout based on my mood. But some mornings I just don’t feel like working out or the rider gets tired by the thousands of workout options available to me.

Instead of giving up or walking away, I already know that I will do a 45-minute power zone workout with Matt Wilpurs. That’s it. That’s my fitness emergency procedure.

You might set yours by creating accountability from your spouse, planning each day in your Younique Planner, following a checklist that leaves nothing to chance. The key is to anticipate what is going to happen and how it will feel when your rider is tired and clear direction is compromised. Know your emergency procedures and follow them to crush your 90-Day Goal.

Please send me your questions, challenges, and suggestions as we continue in the 90-Day Goal Together. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing the journey with you.
