Most people respond, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, when asked their favorite book in the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. And while it is the first one I read as a child in 1983, my favorite is A Horse and His Boy. We even had a family dog named Shasta.
While this could turn into a full 90-Day Goal Together on why Kelly loves the Narnia series, I will resist the temptation and single out one of my favorite truths from this story. My favorite moment is when Shasta finally meets Aslan who is the great lion representing Jesus in the Narnia Chronicles.
Shasta learned that there was only ever one lion pursuing them even though he thought there were many. He also had to come to terms with the reality that it was Aslan who inflicted terrible wounds on his friend, Avaris’, back on their journey. Shasta wants to know why when he is told, “Child, I am telling you your story, not hers, I tell no one any story but his own.”
Tip 75: Only Your Story
As I work towards my Younique 90-Day Goal, I can look around and wonder why other people are being more successful, why it is so hard for me but so easy for everyone else, why good things aren’t coming my way.
This is such a powerful truth about a life following Jesus that C.S. Lewis reminds us of in this poignant scene. We don’t need anything but Jesus. And Jesus is deeply connected to us individually and to every step of our story. Our power comes from his grace, not comparing us to others.
In this scene Shasta is genuinely worried about his friend and questioning why there is hardship and pain in the world. This is where the wisdom from yesterday’s visit with Julian of Norwich collides together here with C.S. Lewis’ reminder that while pain does exist it is not outside of God’s sovereignty and will be redeemed by him. While it can be confusing or even heartbreaking, we are not given an inside look into others’ stories.
This is your story. You have set a 90-Day Goal to more fully live your calling. Don’t fall prey to the temptation to compare yourself or get distracted by wondering why others are more or less fortunate than you. Take comfort in the fact that Jesus is walking with you.
Please send me your questions, challenges, and suggestions as we continue in the 90-Day Goal Together. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing the journey with you.
