One of the most important things we do in life design is to really appreciate what we have to offer and what we have to work with in our lives. Too often we start from a scarcity mindset—if only I had a business degree, if only I had more money, if only I wasn’t limited to living in this city then I could [fill in the blank]. This type of mindset focuses on what we don’t have and what we perceive is missing in our lives.
Instead of living out a framework based on scarcity we want to live out of a framework based on abundance. We want to focus on all the good we do have and ways to use what is in our disposal to grow, learn, and live our life dreams. We have everything we need right now, right where we are to live an abundant life. Your 90-Day Goal is proof that you can create movement, move closer to your dreams, and realize your abundant life in Christ.
Day 76: Do What You Can.
Instead of thinking about what you can’t do, focus on what you can.
I love the story in the Bible of Jesus being anointed in Bethany. Jesus is lounging, having dinner with a leper. This is already scandalous, Jews did not associate with lepers because it violated their purity laws. And then a woman touches Jesus, crossing the lines of propriety again. This is such a raw and vivid scene of Jesus interacting with people who are on the outside, people who are marginalized, people who might be tempted to have a scarcity mindset.
Instead, this unnamed woman pours a jar of very expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet. She blesses him with this outpouring of her affection and love. Immediately the disciples are fussy—blaming her and righteously saying the money should go to the poor instead of on Jesus’ feet. But Jesus silences them.
Jesus says, ‘“Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could.”
Those words have rattled around in my soul for years. She did what she could. Jesus welcomes her and blesses her for giving what she has.
Do what you can.
Your 90-Day goal, when given freely to God as an outpouring of your gratitude for the gift of life with him, is every bit as precious as the perfume in that alabaster jar. Jesus receives what you can do, recognizing that each one of us comes to the relationship with different talents and resources. Do what you can and that is more than enough.
