Golf is our family game. We love to play golf as a family when the phones have to be put away in exchange for talking, laughing, and swinging. It’s a fun time and can be a very challenging sport. For all you golfers out there or fans of golf who watch the tournaments, it is known that golf gives and golf takes away in a mysterious formula of skill, luck, and wonder.
Anytime there is an opportunity to make golf more predictable and consistent you go for it! Which is why everyone stopped to lean in and listen carefully when Arnold Palmer shared that he had the secret to taking 5 strokes off a golf round. I imagine the room was deadly silent as Arnold prepared to share this game-changing secret. The secret: an eraser.
Tip 77: Embrace the Eraser.
Golf is a self-scored game. It’s your game and this is your life as you crush your 90-Day Goal. If you don’t want to count the ball that went in the water then just erase that moment from your day. In other words, this is your life to design. You decide what to count and when to take some grace by taking back a stroke to keep it fun and moving forward.
The golf purists are moaning and I am getting ready for all the emails about integrity and the handicap system depending on truthfulness. Just settle down. I’m not encouraging cheating or deception.
But I am saying that scoring is not the only important thing in life. Arnold’s comment was so well received because golf is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. And if the score is keeping you from the conversation, community and joy then embrace the eraser.
Hear the good news of the gospel—you are forgiven. Jesus wields the eraser of grace. Your mistakes don’t define you, instead his grace names you as his beloved. Jesus loves you, joyfully erases your mistakes when you confess and ask for forgiveness, and cheers for you to become the person he created you to be.
Keep on trucking toward your 90-Day Goal and erase the shots into the sand traps. This is your life to design and enjoy.
Please send me your questions, challenges, and suggestions as we continue in the 90-Day Goal Together. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing the journey with you.
