90-Day Goal: Day 86: Increase Your Motivation

We are practicing the spiritual discipline of celebration as we get close to crushing our 90-Day Goal together. Celebration may not come to your mind as you think of spiritual disciplines, but God’s people have practiced it over the ages and so there is something we can learn by their example. Yesterday we talked about how a discipline of celebration trains us to see and give thanks for God’s provision in our lives. Today we will focus on motivation.

Don’t give up now! You may be tempted to coast across the finish line, call it “good enough” or let yourself wander to thoughts of your next 90-Day Goal before this one is fully realized. But this is not an 86-Day Goal exercise!

Stay motivated to put in the last few reps and truly accomplish what you set out to weeks ago at the beginning of this journey. And celebration will help you get there!

Celebration increases motivation. At the most simple and obvious level it feels good to celebrate. We all love a party because we laugh, dance, smile, and rejoice. Feasts and festivals play a huge part in our story as we gather to remember, tell stories, and give thanks to God for bringing us through the hard stuff to this moment of celebration.

Tip 86: Increase Your Motivation Through Celebration.

Often celebrations give us the opportunity to look back and see what we have accomplished. One way that celebration helps us to increase our motivation is by reversing this direction to look at all that we have done, conquered and overcome (instead of looking out ahead where there are unknowns, fears and uncertainties).

Not only do we celebrate what we have done but we also see the ways in which the Lord showed up and helped us in a time of need, challenge or weakness. And maybe it is only in retrospect that we see the ways he provided for us all along!

Finally, celebration helps us to increase motivation by acknowledging that we can do hard things. A 90-Day Goal is a challenge. It is meant to stretch you beyond your comfort zone so you can become more of the person God designed you to be.

So when you crush the little things or the first goals then we get motivated to take on bigger challenges and set the next goals. The phrase “baby steps” is often used to refer to motivation that comes from the confidence we get when we see that a baby step leads to big steps that motivate us to run.

Run celebration this week! Don’t stop short of the goal in only a few days. Use this week-long celebration to increase your motivation for the 90-Day Goal you set and the ways it is helping you to make your ultimate contribution.

Please send me your questions, challenges, and suggestions as we continue in the 90-Day Goal Together. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing the journey with you.
